The Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen existed until the end of World War I. Even though Germany was united in 1871 by Bismarck, States were permitted to issue 2 to 5 Mark coins under their cognizance. This 1909 3 Mark coin was minted to memorialize the death of Prince Karl Gunther.
