The Grand Duchy of Hesse existed until the end of World War I. Even though Germany was united in 1871 by Bismarck, States were permitted to issue 2 to 5 Mark coins under their cognizance. This 1 Thaler coin was issued in 1871 to mark the victory over France in the Franco-Prussian War.
