Costa Rica Un Colon 1923 counterstamped on Costa Rica 50 Centavos (1902 CY). Due to inflation and the rise in the value of silver Costa Rica countermarked 25 & 50 Centavos coins to twice their previous face value. This was done to prevent melting and the need to mint a new series of coins entirely. This was an official action based upon Decree # 93 of 10 July 1923. About 426 k Un Colon pieces were created, also 1.162 M 50 Centavos were revalued from previous 25 Centavos coins. The most desirable and scarce are Un Colons overstamped on KM# 162 with dates between 1865 - 1875. The example here is the most common overstruck on KM# 143 (1902). As an AU it is better than most encountered.
